In the past few years it’s been talking about building an international airport in south Bucharest, that will take over the low-cost flights currently operating at Baneasa airport Baneasa. Ludovic Orban, the Minister of Transportation, declared that the most probably, the new airport will be located in Adunatii Copaceni. Until now, Bucharest has been developed only in north. The location, and the building schedule, will be established based on studies that will take in consideration the impact towards environment and residential locations. The airport will be located in Adunatii Copaceni, 20 km from Bucharest, according to Ludovic Orban the Minister of Transportation.
Bucharest-Danube Channel
Another project for south Bucharest development, with a cost estimated to 450 millions euro is Bucharest- Danube Channel. The feasibility study should start this month. The investment has been abandon in 1989, although at that time 75% of the construction was ready. The minister also stated that he sent over the Danube-Bucharest project from the Ministry of the Environment, where it was recorded as an irrigable channel, to the Ministry of Transport and become navigable. “The channel is very important for Bucharest. The capital will be accessible from the Danube itself, and in the not-so-distant future will allow transportation on it. Currently only 18% of the Danube’s navigable potential is used”, continued Ludovic Orban, as quoted by NewsIn.

The construction of the southern airport will begin in 2009 and will be ready by the end of 2010, while the Danube – Bucharest channel requires a feasibility study that will be completed no later than mid 2009, says the minister of Transports, Ludovic Orban.
Ana Maria Ionita, EuroMetropola advisor, considers that “The south is one of the areas with a strong development potential for the next 2 or 3 years in the residential segment, and its large land areas offer multiple choices to developers”. “I think a price increase in the South is sure to come, as a result of the development of the infrastructure, and of the construction of the airport and of the Bucharest – Danube channel, but right now it is rather difficult to say by how much it will grow.
